However, the Regent of Teluk Bintuni, Petrus Kasihiw, was unaware that the flag had been given over. Despite his appreciation for the deed and acceptance of the flag being turned over to the Indonesian National Army (TNI).

Kasihiw further stated that the flag may be handed over since Yunias Menti and his family had witnessed the achievement of both central and regional development in Papua.

“I didn’t anticipate that either, but it might be a wish and aspiration, and people who believe that seeing the present usage, seeing how the government and army are driving growth, seeing how the police are serving, they touched and passed it over,” Kasihiw explained.

An Overview of the West Papua Flag

The Morning Star flag originally flew on December 1, 1961, and remained in place until October 1, 1962, when the Papua area was administered by the United Nations Interim Executive Authority (UNTEA).
