UN West Papua Delegate “PEPERA Is No Use Against Indonesia”

The UN human rights agency will not immediately follow up on the referendum petition submitted by West Papua Delegate separatist figures to the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. Previously, reports had appeared in several foreign media that the chairman of the United Liberation Movement for West Papua (ULMWP), Benny Wenda had submitted a petition with 1.8 million signatures, which contains a request for an independence referendum to the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet on Friday 25 February 2019.

The Explanation About West Papua Delegate

However, Benny submitted the petition by ‘hitting’ the Vanuatu delegation while before the UN Human Rights Council in the Universal Periodic discussion Review (UPR) of the human rights situation in the Pacific country. What happened? Here’s information about West Papua Delegate

Not Related To Human Rights Issues

The Permanent Representative of the Republic of Indonesia to the United Nations in Geneva, Ambassador Hasan Klein explained that the submission of petitions could be done in addition to directly through the online registry which was addressed to the ‘petition team’ section of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. However, this will not automatically be followed up, especially if the petition is completely unrelated to human rights issues. The petition is related to the issue of a referendum which is completely outside the mandate of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights

Indonesia Condemns Vanuatu

Meanwhile, the PTRI Office for the United Nations in Geneva explained in an official statement that Indonesia strongly condemns Vanuatu’s move to intentionally infiltrate Benny Wenda in their delegation to a meeting at the UN Human Rights Council and immediately submitted a petition related to Papua. infiltrating Benny into the Human Rights Council is a violation of the UN Charter.

Vanuatu is considered to have deceived the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights by taking manipulative steps through the infiltration of Benny Wenda into the Vanuatu delegation. Even though Benny Wenda’s name was not included in the official list of the Vanuatu delegation

West Papua Delegate Uncompromising Action

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights also stated that his party was very surprised considering that the meeting was solely intended to discuss the UPR of Vanuatu. Through a post on his social media account, Benny Wenda said the petition had been signed by 1.8 million West Papuans who demanded freedom to determine their destiny, after decades of suffering from genocide and occupation by the Indonesian authorities.

The UN Continues to Support Indonesia’s Sovereignty Over Papua

The UN continues to support Indonesia’s sovereignty over Papua, thus closing the chance for a referendum for OPM leaders and sympathizers. The United Nations said it rejected the proposal from Asia Pacific countries for a Papua Referendum and recognized that Papua was an integral part of Indonesia. On the other hand, the Indonesian government has sent a note of protest to the Vanuatu government which is considered not to respect Indonesian sovereignty by supporting the Papuan separatist movement.

The United Nations has seen the outcome and the seriousness of the development of the government in the era of President Jokowi in Papua and West Papua. The United Nations reminded Indonesia that the police should exercise restraint so as not to cause repercussions, including accusations of human rights violations. The President, the National Police Chief, and the TNI Commander ordered the security forces not to be repressive.

That is the explanation regarding the UN West Papua Delegate, West Papua Independence Petition Is No Use Against Indonesia. Indonesia will never back down to defend and defend the sovereignty of the Republic of Indonesia.
