West Papua Poultry Export Opportunities

As the fulfillment of the requirements of the World Animal Health Agency and refers to the Regulation of the Minister of Agriculture No. 28 of 2008 on the Arrangement of Compartmentalization and Zoning, Papua province has implemented efforts to control and eradicate Avian Influenza disease

 Indonesian Government continues striving to increase state revenues through the export of various strategic commodities, in order to improve the country’s economy. To that end, the government through the Directorate General of Stockbreeding and Animal Health Ministry of Agriculture continues to improve the health status of animals with disease control programs, especially Avian Influenza (AI) in Indonesia because the animal health status becomes the main requirement and one of the competitiveness in international trade.

“Therefore, in the framework of the Avian Influenza (AI) disease control program in Indonesia, the Directorate General of stockbreeding and Animal Health of the Ministry of Agriculture takes policy by liberating the livestock through compartments, zones, islands or provinces,” said Fadjar Sumping as Director of Animal Health. According to him, the government has now issued 55 free AI compartment certificates for active Breeding Farm.

“Now following one step forward to be successful in the field of animal health and national poultry business, the release of Decree of the Minister of Agriculture No. 600 / Kpts / PK320 / 9/2017 on Papua Province as AI Free Zone in poultry zone is being issued,” said Fadjar Sumping.

According to Fadjar Sumping, this is the culmination of the extraordinary work and achievements of the stockbreeding and Animal Health Service of Papua Province and Regency/City, and Maros Veterinary Center as the Technical Implementation Unit of the Ministry of Agriculture in eastern Indonesia. “Based on the results of surveillance for two years, there is no case of AI in Papua Province, either syndromic case report that leads to AI disease or virological testing”, he said. “With the AI Free status, the advantages, and opportunities of poultry business development in Papua are safer in poultry health aspect and market opportunity is wide open both domestically and internationally,” he said.

Fadjar Sumping explained that Papua Province has a very strategic value in strengthening the health status of poultry for the development of new centers of poultry business to meet the needs of eggs and poultry meat for the interest in the region of Papua.” As a province bordering the State of Papua New Guinea (PNG), then from now on Papua province is widely open to export poultry products to the neighboring Country. This is, of course, after the consensus of Sanitary requirements with the PNG Veterinary Authority, said Fadjar Sumping.

“In addition to PNG Country, also in the future more open opportunities for some archipelagic countries in the Pacific region,” he said. “The strengthening of food in the Border region with other countries is very supportive and in line with one of Nawa Cita’s programs from Joko Widodo and Jusuf Kalla’s current administration,” said Fadjar Sumping. “In addition, there is one other strategic aspect of the positive impact of AI’s free status achievement in Papua Province, which contributes to preserving biosafety through efforts to prevent and minimize the risk of AI disease infestation to the Cenderawasih Bird populations, the pride of Indonesia,” he concluded.
