The XX National Sports Week (PON), held in West Papua Province, is getting closer. This event is scheduled for October 2-15, 2021 and attended by 6,484 athletes from 34 provinces throughout Indonesia. PON XX Papua will compete in 37 sports, 56 sports disciplines, 679 match/race numbers, and 6,484 athletes. The competitions will be spread in some clusters: the Jayapura City cluster, Jayapura Regency cluster, Mimika, and Merauke. These four regencies have prepared the internationally standard infrastructure for the four-year events. Let’s get to know sports at PON Papua 2021 that will be competed based on those clusters.
Jayapura City cluster
PB PON Papua Competition Field Olof Monim said that the Jayapura City cluster would compete in 15 sports with 21 discipline numbers. The opening and closing ceremony will also be held in this West Papua city, in Lukas Enembe stadium, to be exact. Gymnastics will be conducted in Lukas Enembe sports complex, while athletes will use the aquatic area of this sports complex for diving, water polo, swimming, and artistic swimming. Shooting sports are focused at Luke Enembe indoor shooting range.
Jayapura City has also prepared Doyo Baru Sport Complex. Doyo Baru hockey sports hall will be used to hold field hockey while Doyo Baru hockey field will be used for outdoor hockey. Doyo Baru Sports Complex also boosts its cricket field as a place to compete in cricket. Jayapura City cluster prepares Lukas Enembe sport complex and Doyo Baru Sports Complex and Universitas Cenderawasih (Uncen) to hold the events.
Football athletes will fight over medals through games in Mahacandra Uncen Stadium, Jayapura, West Papua. Meanwhile, Uncen baseball and softball field is used for baseball and softball competition. For weightlifting and bodybuilding, Uncen Auditorium will hold the battling.
Moreover, sepak takraw will be held in GOR Rudy Resnawan, Kempo and Muaythai will be conducted in GOR STT Gidi Sentani, and Rugby Seven will be competed in Barnabas Youwe stadium. Barnabas Youwe stadium itself can accommodate 3500 to 4000 spectators. As for canoeing, paddling, and dragon boating, these sports will be contested in the Jayapura rowing arena. You can also see the spectacular nature of Teletubis Hill Doya Lama as you witness the Paragliding competition.
Mimika Cluster
The Mimika cluster competes in 9 sports and 12 disciplines. The 9 sports will be focused on Mimika sports complex. The sports are athletics which will be conducted in Mimika stadium, basketball which will be taken place in GOR Mimika, billiard that will be competed in GOR billiard Mimika, and rock climbing that will take place in Mimika Rock Climbing. There is also futsal in which athletes will fight for the gold, silver, and bronze medals in GOR Futsal Mimika. Meanwhile, GOR Eme Neme Yauware will be used to organize Judo and Fighting Degrees.
Jayapura Regency cluster
The Jayapura Regency cluster competed in 14 sports at PON Papua 2021 and 22 disciplines. Indoor volleyball will be held in GOR Koya Koso while the beach volleyball will be competed in Koya Koso sand volleyball court. Baseball and softball will not only contested in Mahacandra Uncen Stadium but also in Sentani airfield baseball and softball fields.
Jayapura, West Papua Mayor’s office tennis court will be used for tennis competition, GOR Waringin to hold badminton, and GOR Cenderawasih to contest boxing. Football athletes will not only compete in Mahacandra Uncen Stadium but also in Mandala stadium. As for archery, Jayapura archery field will host the contesting. Moreover, you can also see the competition of roller skates in Jayapura roller skate field, Karate and Taekwondo in GOR Diklat, sailing, open water swimming, and diving in Youtefa Bay, and paragliding in McArthur Hill.
Merauke cluster
The Merauke cluster will compete in 6 sports at PON Papua 2021 and 6 disciplines, namely football, wrestling, Wushu, motor racing, fencing, and chess. The football competition will be held in Katalpal Merauke stadium which is located in Kelapa Lima village, Merauk regency, Merauke, West Papua while wrestling and Wushu will be competed in GOR Merauke.
The motor racing will be held in Tanah Miring District’s motorcycle racing circuit. This motor racing track is called the Fregeb Waninggap Sai circuit. To upgrade the readiness of this venue for PON, improvements are made in some parts such as the tracking track material, better electricity supply, and additional public stands and VIP stands. Meanwhile, fencing will be contested in Bella Fiesta building and chess will be competed in Swiss Bell hotel ballroom.
Those are sports at PON Papua 2021. The committee decided to drop ten sports from PON XX. The sports that are excluded are bicycle racing, bridge, dance, gateball, golf, petanque, water skiing, soft tennis, table tennis, and woodball. Let us all support this National sports event which is held for the first time in West Papua.
