About Trans Papua Highway Project

Papua is known as an island with very difficult transportation access. This is what causes the distribution of goods from the City to be hampered, so the economy in this place is less evenly distributed.

However, with the Trans Papua highway project, it is hoped that the economy in Papua can become much better.

Trans Papua Highway

The stretch of the Trans Papua Highways that connects Jayapura and Wamena is known as the Trans Papua Road Project (Ruas Mamberamo – Elelim).

The Trans Papua Road preservation area begins at kilometer 366 + 690 in the direction of Wamena and extends approximately 45.94 kilometers.

The road is now in good shape, however it will be asphalted using a PPP scheme with a 15-year concession period, a return scheme that will be employed in the form of availability payments, and an investment value of Rp3.6 trillion.

The Ministry of PUPR serves as the PJPK and will implement the plan using the DBFOMT (Design Build Finance Ope Rate Maintenance System) system.

With this highway, transportation access from Jayapura to Wamena becomes easier. The delivery of various goods made from the city is also getting smoother.

Unique Facts about Trans Papua Highway

Some of the Trans Papua Roads have been completed and have been connected between regions, one of which is Jayapura-Wamena. The Trans Papua road has connected the two regions.

This road divides the village, wilderness including conservation areas. Here the unique facts about this project:

1. Chasing Connectivity

Maluku and Papua are combined into one node of the economic corridor in the country’s development strategy.

Investment initiatives based on natural resources, the development of unique places, and the establishment of new economic hubs will all be part of the economic corridor.

Building a road network is one strategy to link these places. The Papua-Maluku corridor’s top five economic sectors are food crops, copper, nickel, oil and gas, and fisheries.

With this road, it is hoped that the community will have better access to deliver these commodities.

2. Pass Through the Conservation Area

According to Yan, the Membrambo Foja Wildlife Sanctuary is around 100 miles away. The Trans Papua road passes through a large conservation area, however this is not yet known.

Lorentz National Park is one of the protected zones that the Trans Papua route passes through in the mountains.

The biodiversity in this national park is really high. In fact, it is recognized to as the Asia Pacific region with the most comprehensive environment.

With this project, it will certainly change the surrounding environment. Most likely the land will be used as residential areas, such as gardens, and so on.

3. A Road for Community Not A Commodity

Through the development of the Trans Papua road, the government hopes to link Merauke and Sorong.

TAF and LIPI recommend that the government instead construct more roads between communities and hubs for health, education, and economic services in Papua’s districts and regencies.

Improved access to fundamental medical and educational services for indigenous Papuans is a result of road construction.

In urban locations, residents have greater access to schools. Because of the faster and simpler transit to their workplace from where they live, health workers are also more likely to be on site.

The Trans Papua Highway is expected to be able to provide benefits to the local community so that it can be used as a way to launch all economic activities that occur between the two regions.

In addition, it is also hoped that the economy will be better if this road has been inaugurated by the government.
