Countries That Support West Papua as a Part of Indonesia

Over the years, separatists have been discussing the issue in West Papua and their claim to freedom. Papua is part of the Indonesian government; this resulted from the negotiation after the Dutch left the place. Many countries that support West Papua as part of Indonesia as well. Countries that support West Papua as part of Indonesia

Papua New Guinea is the first nation from some other countries that support West Papua as Indonesia. The minister of Papua New Guinea claimed their respect over the Indonesian sovereignty to Papua. He also claimed that the Papua region’s issues are Indonesia’s domestic problem. They recorded the statement of this minister during the ceremony of handing over the CASA aircraft engine CT 7-9C for the country’s defense force on 2021 August 4. In this ceremony, he expressed his feeling of gratitude to the TNI. 

Lieutenant General Joni Supriyanto of the TNI’s Strategic Intelligence Agency (BAIS) also expressed the two countries’ relationship over many years. This ceremony signifies the good relationship between the two parties and enhances the TNI and Papua New Guinea Defence Force for peace and security. 

The two parties, TNI and Papua New Guinea Defence Force have been in active cooperation and assistance to strengthen the country’s diplomacy. 

Meanwhile, Australia is one of the other countries that support West Papua as part of Indonesia’s sovereignty over Papua. Based on the Lombok Treaty in 2006, Australia is committed to Indonesian integrity, national unity, and sovereignty over Papua.

Regarding the meeting of International Parliamentarians for West Papua in Canberra, Australia claimed that this was not their view of Papua. Australia’s relationship with Indonesia has the largest support of the Australian parliament. Australia remains in a partnership with Indonesia and wishes to keep contributing to each other’s success. 

UN General Assembly Conclusion

Indonesia, in this Assembly, also denied the claim of human rights abuses in Timor Leste in the 1990s. Meanwhile, in the UN General Assembly, Indonesia is bombarded by some countries over their stance to Papua independence.

The countries raise their concern about the conflict in Papua with the separatist. Including the Solomon Islands Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare. His say over the human rights in Papua was bombarded with some accusations of Nara, an Indonesian diplomat, as an interfering act in Indonesian affairs. 

The local media later applauded this young diplomat’s bravery and straightforwardness.

The protestors also raise their voices over what people claim as human rights abuses to the Indigenous Papuan people in so many years. They want some justice to be done to the people responsible for it. They also claim support for Papua. For this matter, Indonesia also needs to plan different things to resolve this conflict and end the violence between the two.

Indonesia’s sovereignty over Papua is quite clear. However, many people do not agree with it and support the separatist party over Papua. They also heard these issues in the UN General Assembly.
