Exploring Kali Kaca the Hidden Paradise in Maybrat West Papua

What would cross your mind if you heard the word West Papua? Is it Raja Ampat? Or is it Misool Island?

Well, West Papua is more than just marine life and underwater scenery. This place has a bunch of natural beauty ready to explore. And if you are ready for some adventure in West Papua, you should set your itinerary to Ayamaru District and visit Kali Kaca.

What is Kali Kaca?

West Papua has many potential water destinations, such as waterfalls, lakes, and rivers. Since some of them are located in the middle of the wild, those places are not as popular as other destinations, such as beaches and mountains.

You can say that Kali Kaca is one of the newest additions to West Papua tourist destinations. The name Kali Kaca literally means “glass river” since the water looks crystal clear like a sheet of glass.

Kali Kaca itself is popular among locals, which also becomes why tourists from outside Papua would make time to visit this river.

As its name suggests, this river has crystal clear water – you can even see the bottom without trying. Also, since the place is located in the middle of the woods, you will face a little adventure to reach this place.

The weather is excellent and fresh, suitable for taking off your guard for a while. And if you happen to visit West Papua, be sure to visit Kali Kaca, after all.

Kali Kaca is such a hidden gem in the woods of West Papua. However, it is not that easy to reach this destination.

You can start from Sorong by taking a car or motorcycle – it may take around 6 hours from the city center. Feel free to check the route on Google Maps. You won’t get lost by sticking to its ways.

Once you have reached the destination, you park your vehicle at the dedicated parking lot and take another two-kilometer walk. Along the footpath, you will see how rich the woods of West Papua are, along with greenery owned by locals.

It might be a tiring route. What you see in Kali Kaca will pay it off. The first thing your eyes would catch is the blue crystal clear water of the river. Yes, it is a river, and the water is blue.

You are allowed to play in the water or swim through it. But keep in mind that the water might be icy cold considering how natural the source is. Or, you can enjoy the serenity by sitting under a tree.

The only thing that might be a bummer about this place is the lack of facilities. Kali Kaca is very raw and undeveloped for now. This is why visitors cannot find any dedicated area to change, a toilet, or even trash bins.

Other than that, the stones are slippery, especially during the wet season. Thus, be sure to always watch out for your step while visiting Kali Kaca.

There are no stalls and refreshments around the location. You better bring your lunch or snacks but don’t leave anything on the scene, after all.
