Indonesia is the paradise of natural attractions. From the sky to the sea, it seems like Indonesia will never get tired of showing off its beauty.

West Papua happens to be one of the places in Indonesia that hold the title of “Paradise on Earth”. The land and the sea are more than just stunning, making this place one of the must-visit places for everyone who visits Indonesia.

So, what things would you get when you visit Papua?

#1 Stunning underwater destinations

West Papua is famous for its coastal destinations and underwater attractions. It seems impossible to ignore the beauty of West Papua’s sea and anything beneath.

This is also why many surfers, divers and snorkelling enthusiasts will put West Papuan on their list of vacation destinations. Once you have dived under the sea, you can only see the colourful corals, fish and many other things in West Papua’s sea.

The overall vibe is also romantic, which is why this particular place in Indonesia will be the right destination for any kind of vacation – even a romantic one.

#2 Witnessing breathtaking views in Pianemo Island

West Papua particularly has stunning views about the islands and the sea compared to Papua in general. Pianemo Island is one of those islands you have to visit while you are in this place.

This island is surrounded by hundreds of smaller islands, shoals and cays, which create breathtaking views that you shouldn’t miss out in the first place. And when you are on the highland in Pianemo, you can capture the beautiful scenery of Raja Ampat’s islands too.

More than anything, this kind of experience may only happen if you are in West Papua.

#3 Learn the history

More than anything, the history is always part of West Papua and you should enjoy the historical trip too.  When you are enjoying your underwater visitation, be sure to check out the Cenderawasih Bay’s WWII wrecks.

Besides the historical value, the wrecks are also home for whale sharks and other stunning creatures down there. The wrecks themselves are subject to various events between Japanese and Allied forces during the WWII.

And if you are lucky, some sea turtles, sea snakes, and tiny pygmy seahorses will say hi too.

#4 Living with locals

Do you know that West Papua is home for over 300 different tribes? Some of those tribes still live in a super-traditional way and have never been in contact. The diversity will give you an intriguing experience, since you practically live with locals while in West Papua.

Other than that, some festivals during August will allow you to get more experiences when it comes to living with locals. The Baliem Valley Festival, for instance, may bring several tribes together.

#5 Enjoy the summits

According to UNESCO, the Lorentz National Park is one of the heritage sites in West Papua. Besides the largest national park, this area is also home for the Carstensz Pyramid.

The summits are open for hiking, but be sure that you are experienced. Other than that, hiring a local guide is a must. Meanwhile, beginners can enjoy hiking the Baliem Valley from Wamena instead.

Conclusion

West Papua always leaves a soft spot in everyone’s heart who has visited this place. Whether it is the land or the sea, this place will never disappoint you.

Other than enjoying nature, West Papua will teach you a lot about culture and history, which you may not get from elsewhere. So, why don’t you arrange your next trip to West Papua and be ready for an adventure?
