What is the Role of Papuan Women in Society?

The role of Papuan women in society cannot be underestimated. Women have a role as agents of change as well as guardians of the preservation of natural forests which are a source of livelihood for indigenous peoples. 

Moreover, Papua is home to many animal species that are not found anywhere else.

The Role of Papuan Women in Society

Considering that Papua is home to many animal species that are scattered in the air, land and waters, the role of women in this matter is very large. 

In addition, women also play an important role in carrying out customs that are still maintaine in Papua. Here’s a full explanation about it!

1. Protection Forest

Because Papua’s forests are home to hundreds of indigenous peoples whose survival depends on forests, protecting natural forests is crucial. 

Past policies that did not respect the environment and the human rights of indigenous peoples must be change. In this case, women’s leadership in conservation, agriculture and livelihoods in the land of Papua is enormous. 

Society should have opened up opportunities for women of the younger generation to improve their abilities in this field to maintain the existence of their environment.

2. Influence Customary Decisions

As we know, women do not only serve in the domestic sphere, but also contribute in the economic, social and political spheres. 

Besides that, traditional women not only manage kitchen affairs, but also become behind the scenes actors who influence customary decisions.

However, unfortunately, until now, the important role of Papuan women is still hindere by the role of those behind the flyover. That way, their access to voicing their wishes and getting priority to be heard becomes less in a society.

3. Strengthening the Community Economy

The economic power of indigenous peoples lies with indigenous women because most of their customary inheritance is manage by them. 

The strict regulations enforce by indigenous peoples are aimed at protecting their customary heritage. They are also involve in decision processes related to the use of land and natural resources in terms of development and investment. 

From the information above, it can be conclude that the role of indigenous women is very important in strengthening the community’s economy. 

Therefore, it must be maintain, care for, value and respect according to custom and constitutionally by the State. The goal is for them to share their opinions.

4. Passing on Cultural Heritage to Children

Papua has a lot of cultural heritage, especially the West Papua culture which has been preserve to this day. 

Women play an important role in transmitting knowledge related to traditions, customs and cultural heritage to their children in social life in society.

Why so? Because women are the closest to their children, these roles and responsibilities must be consider. So that their children are able to absorb knowledge and understanding that are in line with the cultural heritage of the land of Papua.

The role of Papuan women in society is very large, but most people still consider their existence trivial so that they cannot freely voice their opinions. 

In this case, the government must play a big role in providing facilities to them so that Papua can progress.
