Although most of the eastern region of Indonesia is falls into the 3T areas category (underdeveloped, remote, and outermost), there are many hopes of youth generation in the area. West Papua in particular has been boasting its local education growth through 5 top universities in the regions. Those are some of the places where talented figures sprouting out.

The Top Colleges In The Regions

1. Cenderawasih Universities

Going up on the first of the list is the college that was erected in 1962. It is one of the oldest education institutions in the regions that continuously grows over time. As a higher schooling facility, Cenderawasih is known as one of the popular options and the best in education quality. It also has been an opening number of departments to widen its coverage.

Some of the faculties are economics, nursing, law, engineering, teacher training education, medical, social & political sciences, agricultural sciences. Surprisingly, the college itself was the origin of the University of Papua that separated as a new institution in 2000. However, the college itself still has higher credibility and quality to offer.

As one of the prestigious education facilities, Cenderawasih is considered the prime destination for higher schooling. The top west Papua college has two separated campus locations, in Waena and Abepura. Some prominent graduates from this college are Barnabas Suebu, Boaz Salossa, and John Rumbiak.

2. Sains And Technology Jayapura

Established about 20 years apart from Cenderawasih collage, the Sains and Teknology Jayapura is one of the top universities on the island. It is a private college that measly focuses on certain faculty, the sciences, and technology. Since it was established in 1984 by the former governor of Irian Jaya then, USTJ is the first college in the province that focuses on the two majors.

As one of the striving colleges, the college offers a range of scholarships and other faculty. The college was started with 150 students, but it has been in constant development to be one of the best universities in the area. It has about 2.000 to 5.000 students enrolled. USTJ’s total of alumni has reached over 10.000 graduates from across west Papua and Papua. 

3. University Of Papua

Established in 2000, the Unversity of Papua was part of Cenderawasih university. The young age was not a big matter for the college to gain credibility and quality. It has a huge history in the agricultural education in the province since it mostly focuses on the major. It was started with agricultural faculty that separated from the Cenderawasih univ.

However, over time it has widened its coverage with more than 13 faculties under the same premises. Those faculties are agriculture, economics, animal husbandry, forestry, engineering, and many more.  Currently, the university has more than 47 majors concentrations under the 13 faculties. It shows the vast development in the province education.

A good highlight point for the University Papua is the solid graduates that continue education abroad. It has been one of the pieces of evidence that show the equivalent quality of the institutions. Along with the solid graduate, the Papua University is spread across Raja Ampat, Sorong, and Manokwari, the prominent cities in the West Papua province. 

4. Nani Bili Nusantara University 

While University Papua is pretty young, there is also another newly developed institution named Nani Bili Nusantara University. The college is pretty young since it was founded in 2014 under private-owned management. Since it is a new college, it only has Bachelor’s degree for 6 faculties. However, Nani Billi has been approved to be a potential education by the government.

It might be a newcomer, but Nani Bili is another great piece of evidence on the local educational development. The Ministry of National Research And Innovation Agency Or Research and Technology has approved its potentials. The two best faculties from Nani Bili college are Technique & Agriculture, and social & educations with its specific majors.

5. Christian University Of Papua

Another private-owned college that is worth mentioning is the Christian University of Papua. It is one of the oldest educational institutes in Sorong and the province. The college was established in 1856, as one of the specific religious educations, Christian. Since it is privately owned, the college comes with several courses, programs, academic, and non-academic facilities.

Since the west Papua population is mostly dominated by Christians, the college has been striving all these years. Focusing on the six faculties, this college offers more than 10 specific study programs. It ranges from Technique, Law, Economy, Theology, Mathematics & Science, And Agriculture. It also has complete degrees starting from Bachelors, Master’s, and Doctorate.

The growing number and quality of universities are evident in the better education development in the area. The region is currently going with the fast development in many sectors, including education. Those colleges are the higher degree educations, which open a better potential for Papuan generations in the future.
