A Reminiscence of the Papua Indonesia Earthquake

A natural disaster is not something that we can predict easily. These disasters will come at will and never give a teaser of what could happen. When they are gone, everything is not the same again. Earthquakes, floods, and tsunamis Indonesia has experienced all of them. This September, the Papua Indonesia earthquake hit us again.

The earthquake hit the Papua region in just a few seconds. However, the effect of this on the environment and the people is not going to go away. We will remember those three consecutive earthquakes as one of many earthquakes in Papua.

September 2022 Papua Indonesia Earthquake

September 9th, 2022, the morning was going on like always. Everybody is busy doing their own thing. However, everything is not the same again when noon comes.

At 10.59, the first earthquake hit Papua. On Saturday, an earthquake hit Papua. The earthquake, as reported, did not have any potential to trigger another natural disaster, such as a tsunami. This earthquake is 272 kilometers from east-northeast Biak Indonesia. It is from a depth of 16 kilometers or about 10 miles, as the BMKG reported.

In the earlier time, the other earthquake with less rank of magnitude strikes the same location. Each was 6.1 magnitude, 5.9 magnitude, and also 5.5 magnitudes. Each of them did not trigger any tsunami potential. This seismic activity is somewhat the result of the Indonesian location in the Pacific Ring of Fire, where different tectonic plates of the crust on the earth met and then created seismic activity.

Even though being struck by a series of earthquakes, there is no report of any damages.

Several land-based earthquakes occur between their occurrences, according to the Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency, several land-based earthquakes occur between their occurrences. Magnitudes ranged from 6.2 to 5.5 for earthquakes.

The center of the natural disaster is about 37 kilometers or 23 miles northwest of the district of Central Mamberamo in West Papua. With depths up to sixteen kilometers or ten miles.

In the same event, the US Geological Survey also measured the earthquake. The earthquakes are between 6.1 and 5.9 magnitudes, with a depth of around 19 kilometers to 33 kilometers or 11.8 miles to 20.5 miles. Even though it has different measurements, it is quite common for early deduction in this natural disaster.

The Indonesian Meteorology Climatology and Geophysics Agency also gives some instructions to the people so they can keep calm and do any prevention to lessen the damage of the natural disaster. So there will be no harm done to the people.

1989 and June 2010 Papua Indonesia Earthquake

Before the series of earthquakes in Papua this 2022, other earthquakes happened in Papua with bigger magnitudes. These occasions happened in 2010 and 1989. It is bigger and, of course, causes damage and harm to the people.

On 2010 June 16th, in Serui City Yapen Regency Papua, an earthquake with 7.1 magnitudes struck. The earthquake caused some damage to the building and also caused harm to some victims.

The earthquake caused many collapses in the building. Some people were also getting harmed as the building collapsed.

In 1989, an earthquake hit West Papua, Indonesia, on August 1st. With around 120 people were killed because of this natural disaster. Landslides and mudslides in the area mainly killed the victims.

Final Words

A natural disaster will always come without warning. The harm it causes and its damage always seriously impact the one who lives near the occasion. The Papua Indonesia earthquake that recently happened gave us quite a shock. Especially when we know that the series of earthquakes caused some damage to the people around it. As the same human being, we must help each other in need, especially in a time like this.
