Nabire, a District near West Papua will be part of North Papua

At first, Indonesia had only eight provinces, but Papua hadn’t taken part in it yet; not until 1963 when Papua finally and officially was given back to Indonesia. Further, in 1969, the position of West Papua in Indonesia became more certain after the act of free choice. The action results proved that 1025 people of Papua or West Irian decided to remain as a part of Indonesia.

Nowadays, there are two Provinces in Papua, Papua in the eastern part of the island and West Papua in the western region. In the future, there will be more provinces in Papua, and Nabire, one of the famous districts that are located near the boundary of Papua and West Papua, will be part of North Papua.

Why will Nabire be Part of North Papua?

According to one member of DPR, Yan Permenas Mandeans, Nabire’s reasons to be suggested to be part of North Papua province are the value of Nabire itself (nine prominent tribes, six of which are Saereri).

He also commented since he was born and raised in Nabire, he knew too well about Nabire’s people, including the owners of Ulayat’s rights.

By the rules, he said, speaking of groupings based on 76 in point two Papua Special Autonomy Law, Nabire belongs to Saereri or North Papua region.

Still, all those decisions come from the decision at the Working Committee for the Harmonizations of Draft Laws (RUU) on Papua Province, led by the chairman of the Legislation Body (Baleg) of DPR, Supratman Andi Agas and followed by the proposers of the RUU and the commission II of DPR.

Supratman Andi Agas then said to the regent that the authority of the DPR can’t be influenced or affected by anyone’s letter and aspirations or even suggestions.

Starman Panjaitan, a member of Baleg (legislative body) also commented that a public hearing must be held before the divisions of the newly autonomous region of Papua. He said members of DPR can’t divide the zone according to only what they know.

Papua will be divided into 5 Provinces, West Papua will also be Divided

According to the source, the legislation body held a meeting of the working committee to harmonize laws related to the expansion of Papua Province.

The plan is for Papua will be divided into five provinces: Papua Provinces, South Papua Province, Central Papua Province, Papua Province Central Mountain, and North Papua Province.

The central aspect of the province division is to guarantee the rights of native Papuan people.

“Worries related to the division and expansion that will be carried out shouldn’t be for the welfare/prosperity of the native Papuan. Because Papua’s population is not too many in numbers, that will be a threat to the division plan”.

Paupa people want a guarantee to be involved in many aspects such as working opportunities, investing, and competition in the economic sector. The autonomy must benefit them.
