Electricity Illuminates West Papua

Various electrification programs are being implemented by Government of Indonesia in. By 2019, the whole West Papua can enjoy the electricity.

The government of Indonesia is now sought to create affordability of electricity access for rural areas, especially Papua Province and West Papua Province. The electricity procurement is an effort of Indonesian Government to practice the fifth principle of Indonesian ideology (Pancasila), social justice for the People of the Republic of Indonesia. In 3 years, from 2017-2019 Indonesian Government through Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources has been building 29 power plant, 20 power plants in Papua Province, and 9 in West Papua Province. The electricity program reaches 514 MV also has been targeted to finish in 2019. Next, the electricity program will be continued extending to 186 thousand customers.

“We will do the best to provide electricity in rural areas. Our target in 3 years, whole 2500 rural can be flowed by electric.” Said Agoes Triboesono, Secretary of Director General Electrification, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources of the Republic of Indonesia.

Rural areas electrification program is not done only by building the power plant. But, the Government of Indonesia also applies three approaches. First, extension the power grid together with PLN Lc. Second, pre-electrification program special for the people which residence far from the PLN Lc power grid. The pre-electrification program is a distribution of Energy Saving Solar Lamp (LTSHE). A total of 16.294 is now distributed in West Papua Province, and 120.894 LTSHE in Papua Province. Third, micro-grid-off grid program is being implemented to overcome the residence who far from the power grid. The principle of this program is by cooperating with the Regional Owned Enterprise (BUMD), private-owned enterprise, and union to bring electric to the rural areas. “We will distribute LTSHE packages to various regions, especially Papua Province and West Papua Province. Each house will receive four packages of LTSHE. LTSHE is a breakthrough program to completion of fair electricity access,” stated Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Ignasius Jonan. In State Revenue and Expenditure Budget (APBN) 2017, a total of 330,5 billion rupiahs has been given to be distributed to 95.729 houses. It increases to 976,5 billion rupiahs in 2018 APBN which then distributed to 197.803 houses.
