Telecommunication Development: Equal Access to Quality Information Telecommunication in Jayapura

Equal Access to Quality Information is a discourse that the Jayapura government continues to promote. Thus, through the Communication and Informatics Office, the government of Jayapura Regency is actively constructing telecommunications  infrastructure in the villages so that residents can access information.

The government is attempting to more equitably distribute citizen access to information in the fast-expanding information technology era so that they receive information that contains knowledge.

The Jayapura Regency Government has collaborated with associated companies to erect telecommunication towers (BTS) to address the requirement for information access.

Future generations in Jayapura should become more engaged and grow due to the building of this BTS tower as they compete in the age of globalization in terms of trade, culture, and education.

The government’s construction of high-quality telecommunications infrastructure during the National Paralympic Week (Peparnas) and Papua National Sports Week (PON) activities helped the development of the Modern City of Jayapura. In this approach, there is a greater chance that the plan will work out and that it will do so more quickly.

Quality Communication Access

The Head of the Jayapura City Communication and Informatics Service (Kominfo), Binton Nainggolan, in a press conference entitled “Jayapura City Towards a Modern City” at the Kominfo Peparnas Papua Media Center, Thursday 11 November 2021, said that his party did not need to incur substantial costs in building infrastructure telecommunications in Jayapura City, as an important factor in realizing Modern Jayapura City.

The result of this advancement in telecommunications is that all telecommunications networks in Jayapura City now have access to quality communications.

According to records, Jayapura City has quality communication access in at least 96 percent of its territory. Thus, every community in the region can now communicate smoothly. According to Binton, the areas that have not maximized access are the areas on the border between Indonesia and Papua New Guinea.

According to Binton, the remaining 4% of people live in a few locations with challenging geographic conditions.

Telecommunication Infrastructure and Information Technology

Currently, telecommunications facilities will continue to be encouraged by all stakeholders in developing telecommunications networks.

This could potentially be done quickly, with support from the regulations issued by the President regarding telecommunication networks some time ago.

He said that including telecommunications infrastructure and information technology programs as development priorities in revising the Papua Special Autonomy Law issued in 2021—previously not a priority program.

Jayapura’s Vision of a Modern City

With capital and access to a good telecommunication network, the optimism that Jayapura’s vision of the Modern City can be realized relatively quickly. In achieving this, his party is currently improving technology-based public services. This means that every service performed will be carried out using technology.

From starting with this technology-based public service, Binton said, it can realize services based on the above at this time. The inhabitants of Jayapura City already have access to whatever service they require through the digital realm. Thus, it is now easier for people to get public services.

Smart Cities Concept

Then the above also encourages the concept of a sustainable smart city in the future. Capitalizing on the existence of a quality telecommunications network that has been built at some time. Thus, technology-based city management can always be implemented in various existing sectors.

In this manner, the City of Jayapura may integrate its diverse sectors with the state of technological advancement.  So, with internet technology, all people in Jayapura City can get various conveniences in their lives. Such as in the transportation sector to developing micro, small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).

The subsequent phase will integrate Jayapura City’s current developments with the new city map. One is the construction of the Presidential Palace which will be located in the administrative city area of Jayapura.

The potential of Jayapura City as a city of government, business, tourism, and a myriad of local Papuan wisdom with a unique geography, namely having two bays, Yos Sudarso Bay and Youtefa, is a strength in developing itself as a Modern City.

Hopefully, with the Equal Access to Quality Information program, Jayapura will progress, develop, and become a modern city as planned.
