In Glasgow, Scotland, the UN climate talks about the matter of climate change and ecosystem change in the world. As the climate crisis problem arose, many people roused their alarm to the problem in sight. One of them is the West Papua ecocide.
Manu raises their eyes to this place since it is one of few who still have a natural ecosystem and undamaged environment. However, there are also claims that said the activity in West Papua could become a crime of ecocide. Hence, it is one of the things that is being talked about in this meeting.
Information of West Papua Ecocide
The first day of COP26 being held, many world leaders announced the pledge to stop deforestation by the year 2030. The meeting also talked about the plan to stop any damage to the environment in the world. This also affects the West Papua ecocide.
West Papua is home to one of the largest rainforests in the world. It has some natural environment that has little touch of human beings. Nature is diverse with a lot of bird species and other animals. Not to mention the Puncak Jaya mountain, a high mountain with glaciers on top of it. Making this place is a heaven for the people around it. Many tribes have been around for years gaining some benefit from this land. Cultivating crops and gardening, collecting timber, hunting and many other activities.
West Papua Ecocide Crisis
The proposal of the other government in COP26 is also being presented. The urgency to make this climate crisis is at the top so it is most natural to make a plan out of this problem. Especially with the deforestation problem that has been going on in this land. Many have claimed that this could accelerate the damage to the climate more than ever. Therefore, the guest and the government need to plan something out for this environmental challenge.
However, much of this region is in control of industries that could damage the environment. These heavy industries are gold mines, gas drilling and palm oil plantations. The growth of these industries in Papua is fast and worrying.
The industrial figure was also accused of human rights abuses, to the Indigenous Papuan people. They also gain profit while damaging the environment and the local people’s home.
Therefore, the Indigenous Papuan people formed some Green Vision to protect the forest and to accelerate the transition to a world of zero carbon. To understand the Green State Vision, this vision is the action they took to take the power of the land to the members of Papuan tribe that has lived in that place for years. The people in this vision will control the land and stop deforestation. Hence, the pollution and the violence of human rights will be stopped. They will be able to get the land for themselves like they used to be.
They claimed that the industries in Papua region, like gas drilling, palm oil, and mining; will be stopped by the wishes of the local Indigenous Papuan. The tribe was involved in every decision regarding any change or problem in that land. This will prevent anything to be done without their consent.
Final Words
Whether or not the West Papua ecocide is being done, is not the point. The point is that we need to focus on what matters the most to the world, which is the natural environment. This environment will be for our young generation in the future. Therefore, we need to at least try to preserve it and keep it as it is. No matter the obstacles and no matter the consequences.
