International University of Papua: New Light for Papuans

Not all regions in Indonesia have received the same treatment, resulting in disparities in several areas, including Papua. However, the government continues to improve, especially in the education sector, where the International University of Papua has been established.

Establishing this international university in Papua can help every talented Papuan child experience international standard education. If you are curious about this campus, let’s find the information below!

What is the International University of Papua (IUP)?

International University of Papua is a university in the province of West Papua, Indonesia

If Papua already has several Papua international schools, then IUP is the first international standard campus established in Papua by the government.

The construction of this campus is based on the Decree of the Minister of Education, Culture, Research and Technology No, 24/E/O/2022, regarding the permit for the establishment and inauguration of the International University of Papua (UIP).

Because it is an international university, all learning and activities on campus will automatically use English. So, besides having English language skills, students must also be motivated to follow an education system different from national universities in Indonesia.

To support learning at the international university in Indonesia, the Chairman of the People’s Consultative Assembly of the Republic of Indonesia, Bambang Soesatyo (February 14, 2022), stated that learning at IUP will use the international standard TKBL education platform application.

TKBL is one of the applications that will help the learning process, such as organizing class schedules, managing lecture materials in PDF and audio form, and online conferences.

Bambang Soesatyo also stated that students would continue their education for two years at IUP and two years at partnering overseas campuses. This is an excellent method to adjust students to match international higher education qualifications.

Inaugural Lecture in September 2022

In April and May 2022, IUP opened registration for the first batch of students for the 2022/2023 academic year.

Prospective students who have passed the administrative selection will take academic tests according to their chosen majors. Prospective students who lack English skills will receive intensive training for a year to meet the qualifications. Papua Language Institute held intensive training.

After a long selection process, the inaugural lecture of IUP was finally held in a hybrid manner on September 1, 2022. Many speakers gave the inaugural class, which took place from morning to afternoon at the Suni Hotel Ballroom in Abepura, Jayapura.

After receiving public and motivational lectures from all the speakers on that day, the students could start their day as the first batch at IUP.

Seeing the seriousness of the government’s efforts in advancing Papuan education regarding the International University of Papua, hopefully, every student at IUP can become a generation that runs Papua. With this, the goal of education in Indonesia, which is to educate Indonesian children, can be achieved soon.
