KEK Sorong: A promising Special Economic Zone in West Papua

West Papua keeps preening after officially becoming a new province because the government pays much attention to it. It grows fast not only in the tourism sector with its well-known beautiful Raja Ampat but also in other sectors such as the economic sector. To support its growth, the government made Sorong a Special Economic Zone making this town more developed, and it became famous.

About Sorong West Papua

Sorong is the second biggest city in Papua and the biggest in West Papua. It is also known as Oil Town because it has a great number of oil resources. It’s a strategic place that becomes the gate for the province. Surrounded by supporting districts with their valuable resources makes, Sorong possesses a great chance to invite investors for the town development.

For that reason, Sorong is predicted to become a big successful town, so the government made this town a Special Economic Zone. There are at least 19 towns designed to be Special Economic zone in Indonesia. Twelve towns are in operation, including Sorong, and seven are still in the preparation stage. 

The laws of policy

The laws regulating Sorong’s policy are Law Number 39 of 2009 about Special Economic Zone Regulations and PP Number 31 of 2016 about Sorong as a Special Economic Zone. After the laws were effective, Sorong started to prepare everything for this. After three years, on October 11, 2019, Sorong as a Special Economic Zone was officially launched. Some big investors have joined to develop the town, which indicates that this town has something promising in the future.  

The infrastructure

As a Special Economic Zone in West Papua, Sorong has some supporting infrastructures to make everything accessible. The roads were renewed. Some ports—Sorong and Roro-Roro Arar ports—were built. There is also Domine Eduard Osok Airport to give easier mobilization for the people and investors who want to come to this town.

Other supporting infrastructures in Sorong for economic purposes are industrial infrastructures, power plants, and clean water lines. With these infrastructures, it is expected that more people will come to this town, resulting in bigger economic growth, although its Gross Regional Domestic Product is growing each year. 

The economic opportunity

As stated before, Sorong has many resources that are being developed by the government to improve people’s well-being. In Sorong Special Economic Zone, the logistic sector, nickel, sago, and palm oil processing industries become the main activities. This means that the town has more things to offer to the investors. 

Additionally, most of West Papua also has some developing and growing farming sectors that could improve the economic opportunity. Some farming sector results are vegetables, fruits, some kinds of crops, and some live stocks such as pigs, chickens, cows, and goats. Sorong also offers fishery sectors which result in tuna, mackerel tuna, and parrot fish.

The tourism

If you are an investor and want to invest your money, you have so many options in front of you. Aside from the above sectors in the Special Economic Zone, tourism in Sorong can also become an economic opportunity in West Papua. Some outstanding tourist places can be developed to invite more tourists. 

No one denies that the beauty of West Papua has amazed many eyes. Some famous tourist places in Sorong are Doom Island, Sapta Rana Pagoda, Ayamaru Lake, Sasnek Waterfalls, and Arfak mountains. In short, Sorong can be a good place for investigation, and the economic opportunities here are limitless as there are many things to explore.
