Kaimana is one of the regencies that exist in West Papua. In the past, this area was one of the districts in Fakfak Regency. However, Kaimana was officially established as a regency on 12 November 2002. One of the regents who led the Kaimana Regency was Matias Mairuma. He led in 2010 to 2021.
Since Kaimana Regency was founded in 2002, there have been three regents who have occupied the seat of government. Mairuma is the second regent of Kaimana Regency. The first one is Hasan Achmad Aituarauw and the current one is Freddy Thie.

The Short Biography of Matias Mairuma
Matias Mairuma was born in Kaimana on 24 Juli 1961. He first served as a regent in Kaimana at 49 years old. Then, he finished his duty as a regent at 60 years old. In total, he served as a regent for 11 years. However, he was on leave from 2015 to 2016 due to campaigning for the next regent election.
Educational Background
Basically, educational background is very important for a leader of the people, including a regent. As a second regent that led Kaimana, the educational background of Matias Mairuma is brilliant. He started to go to school at the age of seven in the year of 1968.
Mairuma rolled into Kaimana Public School 01 in 1968 for elementary school and graduated in 1974. Then, he went to Kaimana Public School 1 for middle school from 1974 to 1977. After that, he entered high school at Kaimana Public School 2 from 1977 to 1981.
Then, after graduating high school, Mairuma went to Sorong to study at Victory Sorong University (UNVIC Sorong). In UNVIC, he studied law to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree. However, he went to Bandung, West Java, to pursue his studies in the Graduate and Postgraduate programs.
He enrolled in Jenderal Achmad Yani University to study political science for a Graduate program. Then, he continued his study at Padjadjaran University in political science a Postgraduate program.
Career Background
Aside from their education, the career background of Matias Mairuma is also exceptional. Mairuma comes from the Golkar political party. It is one of the largest political parties in Indonesia. Then, he started his political career as a DPRD member of the Kaimana Regency.
DPRD is an abbreviation of the Dewan Perwakilan Rakyat Daerah. In English, it means the Regional Representative Council of People. Then, he became a DPRD member of West Papua for the term from 2004 to 2009. After that, the citizens re-elected him as a DPRD member of West Papua.
However, in the second term, he only served from 2009 to 2010. Then, he ran in the recent election in 2010 and succeeded in becoming a regent in the Kaimana Regency. After that, he again ran as a candidate for regent for the period of 2016-2021. The Kaimana citizens then re-elected him again.
Achievement
During the 10 to 11 years of his reign, Mairuma brought many positive changes to the development of the Kaimana Regency. The most obvious is infrastructure development. One of them is the construction of roads and also connecting bridges in Inari Village, Lower Arguni District.
The bridges connect the Kaimana Regency, Fakfak Regency, and Teluk Wondama Regency. Then, there is also the construction of a road that connects Kaimana Regency, Nabire District, and Dogiyai District. This development is very important to facilitate the mobility of the people of Kaimana.
Towards the end of his tenure, Matias Mairuma also inaugurated the DPRD office and also the sports hall. The inauguration ended Mairuma’s tenure after serving as regent for two terms. Now, it is Freddy Thie who has replaced his position as regent in the Kaimana Regency.
