History of Sailolof Kingdom in West Papua

Having a lot of monarchy history, one of the Islamic kingdoms from West Papua, which is quite interesting, is the Sailolof kingdom. Here is some interesting information about the Sailolof kingdom, the Islamic kingdom of Raja Ampat.

The Entry of Islam to West Papua

West Papua is an area identical to the history of Islam’s development. Even though in the colonial era, there was a massive or massive Christianization movement or effort, Islam is one of the religions that still exists in West Papua to this day.

The arrival of Islam in West Papua began when the religion entered the Maluku region, including Ternate, Tidore, Banda Island, to Seram Island. Because these areas were close to West Papua, Islam entered the Raja Ampat islands quickly, more precisely in Sorong and the Onin peninsula in Fakfak Regency.

In addition, at the beginning of the 16th century, the tribes in the West Papua region and several islands were subject to the Sultan of Bacan.

Around 1606 Sultan Bacan expanded his territory on the Onin peninsula. Islands such as Waigeo, Waigama, Misool, and Salawati were under the rule of Sultan Bacan, a King of the Moluccas (Maluku).

Through the influence of the Sultan of Bacan and Islamic traders at that time, Islam began to enter West Papua. Gradually, the community leaders in the West Papua region began to embrace Islam, followed by the local community.
