The West Papua Liberation and the People Behind

West Papua is legit, a part of Indonesia like the other provinces there. Before, that place is known as the new Guinea or Nederlands Nieuw Guinea. In that time, this place is not the territorial of the Dutch Kingdom from the year of 1949 up to 1962.

Until 1949, new Guinea is the part of the Netherlands. In that time, the people always call it as the Netherlands New Guinea. The members are two provinces located in the east part of the country; west Papua and Papua for sure.

The history was not stopped there. It is known there were so many moments and struggles before that province is known as the part of this tropical country. To remember that fusion, a date has been choosen. Below is the detail thing which was happened in that old time.

The Efforts Done by Both Countries

During the Indonesian Revolution, the Dutch launched a ‘police action’ to take New Guinea territory from their country. However, that plan to take tge west Papua was not smooth.

The harsh manner of the Dutch has attracted the disapproval between countries. They decide for not supporting that plan and choose the Indonesia. Then the Netherlands in 1949 was able to negotiate with the topic of separating the new guinea with the wider areas to separate.

Based on the data, the decision would be made by the closing in 1950. However, the Dutch in the following years could argue successfully at the United Nations. The topic was that the natives of Dutch New Guinea or west Papua represented an ethnic group separate from the indonesian society.

The Netherlands also think that it should not be absorbed into that state as well. The different opinion owned by the Indonesian. The people there assumed that they are the the successor country of the Dutch East Indies. That is why; new guinea is the part of their nature.

The Problem Always Becomes a Sensitive Issue

This problem always become a very important thing in the declining relationship between the two nation’s. It is especially after Indonesia reached their independent.

Further more, this issue was then leveling up as a low – level conflict in the 18 of z December 1961. That was happened after Netherlands made the west Papua autonomous government.

The decision was made at the same year or in 1961. In that time, Indonesia attacked the Netherlands New Guinea to take the west Papua from the kingdom.

This low – level conflict was then resulting something positive for that tropical country. They were able to get the province under a united government. Untik before the year of 2003, that province was known as Irian Jaya. It is a beautiful place which rich in nature and has the diverse cultures as well.

People Behind the West Papua Liberation

Liberation of that area from the Dutch Was a huge moment in that time. It had the long history and moments to remember until now. Besides that, some people were also having the crucial roles to make it happened. Those are some of those people in the West Irian liberation.

  1. Frans Kaisiepo

Frans Kaisiepo (born 10 October 1921 in Jayapura) was a freedom fighter from Papua. On August 31, along with other fighters from there, he held a ceremony. In that time, they raised the Indonesian flag on that province. In July 1946, Kaisiepo was a member of the Malino Conference Delegation in South Sulawesi.

He is the only indigenous Papuan to attend the Conference. After the Round Table Conference in 1961, he founded the Irian Party. The aim was to sought to reunite the province, with the Republic of Indonesia. The members are those who had the same aims.

  • Silas papare

Silas Papare (born 18 December 1918 – died in Serui, 7 March 1973) was a freedom fighter from that province. He is the founder of the Indonesian Independence Party of Irian (PKII).

On August 17, 1947 Silas Papare led the raising of the Red and White flag to commemorate Indonesia’s Independence Day, along with other fighters. After the recognition of Indonesian sovereignty by the Dutch, West Papua was still occupied by the Netherlands.

To fight for the integration of that area, he made a plan. Silas Papare founded the National Front for the Liberation of West Irian (FNPIB). President Sukarno appointed him as a delegate to the New York Agreement. That meeting resulted in approval for the polls in that province. It became a positive footstep for their fight.

  • Marthen Indey

Marthen Indey was originally a policeman guarding a political prisoner prison in Boven Digul. Here, he meets the freedom fighters exiled by Dutch colonists in the land. Those were including Sugoro Atmoprasojo.

In 1946, Marthen Indey joined the Committee of Free Indonesia (KIM) which came to be known as the (PIM). Marthen and tribal chiefs in that province protested against the Dutch plan to separate the west Papua province from the land Indonesia.
