“With the great potential of yellowfin tuna in Biak, the investors can generate non-tax state revenues. It is up to IDR 17 trillion per year in 717 Biak fishing areas,” Herry Ario Naap, the Regent of Biak, stated.

He hopes the potential of Yellowfin tuna in Numfor Biak sea is good, it will be a great help to boost the economy of the Biak people. Moreover, this potential is supported by the great access to one of the biggest importers, Japan. The import is via the International Airport of Frans Kaisiepo.

The Fish Potential in Biak

The Republic of Indonesia’s Fisheries Management Area 717 is in Biak. It is also known as Cenderawasih Bay, and the Pacific Ocean is one of the biggest yellowfin tuna.

Moreover, the fish industry successfully imported 3,36 tons of yellowfin tuna fish to Japan on December 15th, 2022. Using Garuda Indonesia airline to Narita airport. This marked 40 tons of yellowfin tuna exported already to Japan.

The Head of the Biak Fisheries Service, Effendi Igirisa, stated his hope to export more fish to Japan in the future. Thus, the government should support this growth of Yellowfin tuna potential by providing facilities to improve Biak fisheries.

In addition, there are other potential countries to be the destination of yellowfin tuna export. They are China and the United States. By the average of caught yellowfish successfully exported, the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries of the Republic of Indonesia in Biak waters envision the export can reach up to 800 thousand tons annually.

With many such exports, the approximate value of non-tax state revenue is up to IDR 17 trillion a year. Hence, it is a great economic boost for the local people and Indonesia.

To support the positive growth of yellowfin tuna export in Biak, the tuna canning home industry in Biak Numfor Regency, Papua, will start operating in February 2023.

The Yellowfin canning industry will also open more job vacancies for the people in Biak. Moreover, Herry Ario Naap as the regent of Biak Numfor, informs the media that the capacity of canned tuna in a day can reach 1000 to 2000 cans a day. 

As people in Biak can work in this industry, it will also help to improve the household’s economic income. Hence, it is a great opportunity to become a cornerstone of Biak’s welfare improvement.

To support this plan, the regent encourages fishermen in Biak to be more productive and eager to increase the supply of fresh fish. If the supply is secure, the envisioned number of 800 thousand tons of exported yellowfin tuna is highly possible.

With the collaborative effort from both the government and the fishermen in Biak to raise the export number, it will soon be enough to reach 800 thousand tons a year.  Hence, the yellowfin tuna in Biak will help the economy in Biak to grow exponentially.
