The Canned Fish Industry in Biak Started to Operate in 2023

The abundant growth of yellowfins in Biak Papua has opened a chance for the UMKM (Usaha Menangah Kecil dan Mikro) or the lower middle-class business unit to grow as well. The good news is that the canned fish industry in Biak will start to operate this February 2023. 

Through the fishery affair, the Biak  Numfor Regency, Papua government is trying to develop a homemade canned tuna business for UMKM. Here is the complete news.

The canned fish industry in breeding is experiencing development

To support the starting business of canned fish, the government of Biak Numfor Regency facilitated the UMKM activist with production tools. Herry Ario Naap informed this is related to the home industry development in the fishery sector in Biak in November 2022. 

Furthermore, to support the UMKM activist in the fishery sector, his team has been working with the home industry in Yogyakarta to help the potential development of yellowfin tuna. 

Herry is being optimistic about the development of the canned tuna home industry in Biak since it can empower the family and regional economic growth. Moreover, yellowfin is available abundantly in Biak. 

Meanwhile, Effendi Igirisa, the head of Fishery Affair Biak, makes sure that his party fully supports the policy that Herry Ario Naap determines to make the canned tuna home industry. 

“The UMKM activists in Biak have a high chance to produce canned tuna through the home industry,” Effendi added clearly. 

The regency of Biak is located in Pacific Islands and is potential with sea resources in the form of yellowfin. Today, the tourism and fishery sectors are the main priority programs of Biak Numfor as the contributor of foreign exchange and regional retribution.

Tuna from Biak Numfor, Papua, has become an export commodity. So far, this canned fish has been exported to Singapore. With the support of the Ministry of Marine and Investment Coordinator, the quality and the quantity of canned fish keep on being upgraded. 

Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, the Minister of Marine and Investment Coordinator, appreciated the hard work of Herry Ario Naap. He, together with his team to realize the very first export to Singapura. 

Luhut also said that he and his team will always support the government of Biak Numfor. Hopefully, the support will increase the export quality of canned fish.

He added the government of Biak Numfor’s effort became the representation of Papua and West Papua. It increases the regional income from the regional resources. 

The Minister hopes that the government of Biak Numfor will export the canned fish to Asian regions, like China and Japan as well. The central government will support Biak Numfor to optimize the natural resources. His party will do whatever it can to increase export activity. 

Meanwhile, Herry, as the Governor of Biak Numfor said,  his party has prepared 25 tons of frozen tuna to export for the next step. The shipment of the canned fish will use a ship. 

Herry added we really appreciate the hard work of all related parties, fishermen, and the central government’s support. Finally, the government of Biak Numfor can send a primary commodity to a foreign country.

Herry explained that Biak Numfor does not have mineral resources, such as gold and other mining results. That is why his party focuses on enhancing the management and marketing of sea resources in this area.

The potential of sea fishery in Papua has not yet been cultivated optimally. So far, the fish catching is estimated at only 50% of the total of 332.000 fish annually. The data from the Fishery Affair states that the potential of sea resources in Biak is so high.
