Empowering Biak Youth Economy Through Business Activities

Biak Youth Economy Continues to Grow

The Biak Numfor district has 19 districts, 14 sub-districts, and 257 villages. Each area has abundant biodiversity and has a high potential to improve people’s welfare. 

Through the Biak government policy, they encouraged the community, especially young people, to benefit from their biodiversity. For example, they can open businesses they are interested in, such as animal farming, repair shops, or many others.

Yubelius Usior, the head of the Biak Industry and Trade Service, explained that economic empowerment for the Biak community, especially young business people, has been going on for the last few years. The following are some of the things they do to empower the economy in Biak, Indonesia.

1. Providing Venture Capital Assistance for Biak Youth Economy

The Regent of Biak Numfor, Herry Ario Naap, explained that the government plans to provide business capital assistance to 1,000 young Papuan entrepreneurs with an allocation of funds of 12.7 billion in 2023. 

2. Providing Mentoring and Training Programs

Young business people from Biak are under the supervision of the Department of Industry and Trade. In fact, the business fields they have been involved in since the coaching from the beginning until now are increasingly diverse such as fisheries, the home culinary industry, shop houses, contractors, fishermen, etc.

Meanwhile, the mentoring of egg farming was led by Bambang Hariyanto, the Coordinator of the Livestock Working Group Team at the Biak Food Security Agriculture Service. 

Bambang added that his team has now successfully coached around 70 egg-farming businessmen from various villages in Biak. The mentoring process itself is carried out from the start of the business, such as the preparation, maintenance, animal health check, and harvest.

The government’s economic empowerment in Biak provides many benefits for young people’s businesses. Some of them are:

1. Creating Talented Resources

Through the training provided, the government hopes that in the future human resources, especially those from the younger generation in Biak, will be more qualified and talented. 

Not only that but with coaching and training, the government also hopes that more and more new talents will emerge and play an important role in the Biak economy.

Meanwhile, one of the appreciations for the government’s empowerment program comes from Samparisna Kbarek. After receiving coaching on the egg farming business, he felt motivated and optimistic about pursuing an egg farm business.

2. Increase Business Profits

Coaching and training provided to young Biak business people can maximize the profits that business people get. One example is the profit in the egg farming business in the Biak district. They can even have a surplus of chicken eggs.

Additionally, egg production from laying hens, which young Biak people dominate, has also provided a satisfactory income for the economy of their respective families. Bambang Hariyanto says they get various incomes from every harvest, even an average of millions of rupiah.

3. Reducing the Level of Poverty in Biak

Based on the poverty rate data recorded by the government, community economic development efforts that have been running for several years have proven to be able to reduce the poverty rate in Biak. 

The poverty rate in 2019 is 25.50%. This figure decreased in 2020 to 24.57%. Then, in 2021, the poverty rate decreased again to 24.45%.

Going forward, the government will continue the process of improving the empowerment of the Biak youth economy. By increasing the quality of resources and business profits, the government is optimistic that this will be able to prosper the people of Biak.
