Indonesia is not only famous for its language, islands, tribes, and culture which is still thick and quite widely spread in various regions. Many exotic animals in Indonesia are still protected to avoid extinction by irresponsible humans.

5 Animals That Only Exist in Indonesia

There are quite a lot of exotic animals in Indonesia and not anywhere else. The preservation of these animals is certainly almost extinct due to arbitrary human activities, such as poaching, felling trees in their natural habitat, and so on.

1. Orangutan

One of the most well-known endemic species from Indonesia is the orangutan. However, it is really regrettable that these animals’ original habitat has been lost.

Animals with the Latin name Pongo have always been the center of attention of many people in the world.

2. Komodo

The next exotic animal that lives in Indonesia is Komodo. The world is familiar with Indonesia and its native giant reptile, the Komodo. The Komodo dragon is the largest lizard in the world and has a very distinctive size and shape. 

Komodo dragons can grow to a length of 3 meters and weigh up to 70 kilograms.

Along with its enormous size, this animal is also unusual for having poison coming from its forked tongue. This animal’s native habitat is Komodo Island in East Nusa Tenggara.

3. Kekah Natuna

Only Natuna Island, specifically Bunguran Besar, Natuna Regency, is home to the endangered primate known as Kekah. Kekah Natuna is a bashful creature with a nice stance.

The eyes are surrounded by white rings. The animal’s head has erect hair that is primarily white, gray, and brown in color. 

Additionally, Kekah Natuna is classified as Vulnerable to Extinction or Vulnerable on the Red List of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) (VU).

These primates are dispersed throughout various forest types and altitudes. It has uniqueness that makes everyone stunned when they see it.

4. Halmahera Angel Bird

One of Indonesia’s rare species, the Halmahera angel bird is distinctive, lovely, and endearing. The Flirty is the name given to the angel bird because of its eye-catching color scheme and intriguing behavior.

Birds of paradise and angels still belong to the same family. 

The Maluku Islands are a true form of paradise that is spread out in the westernmost region, and this urung angel bird is from there.

5. Javan Leopard

One of the endangered predators in Indonesia is the Javan leopard (Panthera pardus melas). This animal is a common leopard subspecies (Panthera pardus). The Javan leopard is occasionally referred to as the panther by residents of the island of Java. 

Currently, the Javan leopard is in danger of being extinct. There were just 250 Javan leopard populations as of 2008.

Experts and government representatives agree that the decrease in the leopard’s native habitat in the forest is to blame for the population decline.
