Biography of Jonathan Annes Jumame, The First Sorong Mayor

Jonathan Annes Jumame was born on Maybrat, 15 December 1949. Jonathan served as mayor of Sorong for two periods, from 2001 to 2006 and in 2007 and 2012. Subsequently, he served as deputy chairman of the West Papuan House of Representatives from 2014 to 2019.

Jonathan Annes Jumame was the first mayor of Sorong and is known as a figure who contributed to the city’s development. He died on 1 November 2021 in Sorong because of a heart attack. He left behind a wife, seven children, 17 grandchildren, and one great-grandson.

Based on the information that one of Jonathan Annes Jumame’s children-in-law, Ronald Wally, conveyed, Jonathan did have a history of heart disease. Jonathan already has a history of heart disease and has had regular check-ups since 2005.

Early Education

The former mayor of Sorong took his first school at a public school for three years. After that, he continued his education at YVVS Teminabuan in South Sorong for three years.

Jonathan Annes Jumame then continued his higher education at Yayasan Pendidikan Kristen Biak Middle School for one year. Next, he continues his study at Yayasan Pendidikan Kristen Syaloom Klademak Middle School for two years.

For high school, Jonathan enrolled at Sekolah Menengah Atas Negeri 1 Sorong in 1968. Jonathan Annes Jumame completed his senior high school for three years during this school period.

Six years later, Jonathan continued his education at the Academy of Domestic Administration or APDN Jayapura in 1974. Furthermore, in 1983 Jonathan Annes Jumame studied at the Institute of Government Science or Institut Ilmu Pemerintahan (IIP) in Jakarta.

Political Career

Jonathan Annes Jumame started his political career as Head of Beoga Sub-district, Puncak Regency, and Homeyo Sub-District, Paniai Regency. Furthermore, based on his career track record, Jonathan has also worked as the Head of Sub-Division of Administration at Paniai’s  Regional Revenue Service.

It doesn’t stop there. Jonathan Annes Jumame’s political career continues to grow. After serving as the Head of Administration for the Regional Revenue Service of Paniai Regency, Jonathan Annes Jumame worked as a Regional Inspector of Sorong Regency.

From 1996 to 1999, Jonathan served as the administrative mayor of Sorong. Next, in 1999 to 2001, he served as mayor of Sorong. Jonathan’s career continues to grow until 2019.

As explained earlier, Jonathan Annes Jumame served as mayor of Sorong for two terms. Jonathan was mayor of Sorong from 2001 to 2006 and 2007 to 2012. After that, he served as deputy chairman of the West Papuan DPR from 2014 to 2019.

Jonathan has also served as Head of the Monitoring Team for the Special Autonomy Fund (Dana Otonomi Khusus) from the West Papua DPRD. In this position, Jonathan urges the use of Otsus funds to be right on target and provide benefits to improve the welfare of indigenous Papuans.

Jonathan Annes Jumame’s Award

During his life, Jonathan Annes Jumame received quite a prestigious award. In 7 January 2008, Jonathan received the Upakarti award. He received this award alongside the regent of Sidoarjo, Win Hendrarso, and the regent of Jepara, Hendro Mojo.

The Upakarti Award is an award in the industrial sector. This award gives to parties who have achievements, are meritorious, and actively carry out development and empowerment in small Industries (IKM).The Upakarti Award Jonathan Annes Jumame received was handed over directly by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono at the State Palace. Jonathan received this award for his concern for Sorong’s small industry.
