Land of Papua’s Opportunity for Increasing Welfare

The government plans development in various fields as a form of effort to advance the potential of Papua’s land. It begins with the inauguration of the PYCH. Find out more about the land of Papua’s opportunity and the government’s future plans here.

PYCH as the Initial Opening of Progress in Papua

PYCH (Papua Youth Creative Hub) is a young papuan infrastructure so they can be creative and have excellent skills in various fields. Examples include agriculture, animal husbandry, SMEs, arts, and many others.

Meanwhile, the inauguration of the PYCH building by President Jokowi was held on March 21, 2023. In his remarks, the president expressed his greatest appreciation for the construction of PYCH. 

Besides, he also expressed his hope that PYCH could be a good start for community members to improve welfare in the land of Papua. 

The President also hopes that PYCH and its various types of facilities can be utilized as well as possible. In fact, the success of developing PYCH made the president hope that other regions could also follow in the footsteps of building creative centers for young people in their respective regions.

Furthermore, the president hopes that creative hub buildings like PYCH can also exist in areas such as East Nusa Tenggara, West Papua, Maluku, and Aceh. Not only that, but President Jokowi also added that the land of Papua’s opportunity has great potential and opportunities that Papuan young people can take advantage of.

Meanwhile, various government agencies and ministries attended the inauguration event as well. One of them was the Minister of Manpower, Ida Fauziah. 

Ida said that she also appreciated the various parties involved in building PYCH. He believes that the existence of PYCH is one of the efforts to support government programs in order to create superior and competent human resources.

Seeing the Land of Papua Opportunity

The Land of Papua has abundant natural and human resources with great growth and development potential. Therefore, development in Papua is very important to do. One of the parties that are also considering development plans in Papua is the Ministry of Manpower.

Ida said that she, as the minister of manpower, had thought of several plans as a follow-up to President Jokowi’s directives to develop Papua. These programs and policies will later focus on human resource development in Papua. Some of them are as follows:

  • Competency-based vocational training
  • Development of Skill Development Center (SDC)
  • Productivity improvement training
  • Apprenticeship
  • Accreditation of job training institutions

Not only that, but Ida also hopes that various parties will strengthen synergy and collaboration to improve the quality and competence of human resources in Papua. 

The various parties she refers to are the central government, regional governments, parties from the private sector, as well as the elements of the Papuan community. So, there is involvement from various parties to support the HR development program in Papua.

Plans Related to the Land of Papua Opportunity

Meanwhile, the Deputy Chief Representative of Bank Indonesia for the province of Papua, Dedy Irianto, also conveyed efforts to develop resources in Papua. 

1. Bringing MSMEs from Papua to Various Regional and National Scale Events

One of them is bringing MSMEs from Papua to various regional and national scale events. For example, participating in coffee festivals, being involved in the Proud Made in Indonesia Movement, and so on.

2. Encourage the Development of MSMEs 

In addition, his party also plans to continue to encourage the development of MSMEs by increasing production capacity, marketing, and strengthening the digitalization of MSMEs. 

That way, MSMEs in Papua have advantages and strategic value. Examples of products include coffee, chocolate, crafts, Papuan batik, and so on.

Meanwhile, the great potential of Papua’s land is also evidenced by economic growth data from the Indonesian Bank representative office in Papua. Bank Indonesia Representative for Papua province estimates that there will be an increase in the economy in Papua in 2023. 

The non-mining sector is the main contributor to the increase in economic growth in the 3.75-4.15% range. This shows that the land of Papua’s opportunity for increasing welfare is very big.
