Manokwari was once just a district in Papua. After the region’s expansion, it is now the capital of West Papua. The Pelni Manokwari cargo performance also grows positively.
West Papua is among one of the fastest in Papua to grow. The growth itself covers the improvement of administration, public service, and development.
One of the efforts to create a better West Papua is by improving the transportation. It is due to the fact that some districts and areas in Papua are isolated and have difficult access.
To bring more stocks and people to Papua, Pelni, as one of the nation’s water transportation services, added more ships and routes to reach Manokwari and Sorong. The detailed plan is about as much as what is stated below.
Pelni’s Plan in Advancing Manokwari Access
One of the plans to accommodate the growth of West Papua is bringing more needs and stocks from Java. Therefore, Pelni created plans to bring the advancement closer by adding Pelni cargo ships and routes.
The routes are also two-ways in terms of access. Hence, goods from Java or other cities and those from Papua have a faster speed to get delivered.
Second, not only are cargo ships getting numerous, but they also create access for local people to other cities in Indonesia.
Therefore, now they have more opportunities to learn and pick up new things to develop West Papua even better.
Pelni’s Preparation in Developing The Transportation
In order to execute the plan, Pelni needs more harbors in Papua. Water transportation will not be able to reach the area if there is no harbor.
Therefore, here are the plans by the Ministry of Transportation:
1. To Build Harbors in Some Areas of Papua
An example is Depapre harbor which connects Jayapura and other regions in Indonesia. They accelerated the harbor construction to gain easier access.
While Manokwari they have the Kaimana harbor. Kaimana harbor is the center of water transportation traffic that goes to and from Manokwari.
2. Added More Routes
Pelni also added more routes that transit through Kaimana harbor. Therefore, delivering cargo from other regions now has better and faster access. In addition to Kaimana harbor being the center of Manokwari cargo shipping, it also connects Manokwari people to visit and see other regions in Indonesia.
Thus, Manokwari people can access other facilities that are not available yet in their hometown. This indirectly helps the human resources growth in West Papua.
Pelni’s New Routes In Manokwari
One of the biggest supporting factors to create better economic growth is the easy access. To accommodate this, Pelni opens new routes with new ships.
1. KM Labobar’s Route
The first is KM Labobar’s route. KM Labobar is one of the new ships that have Manokwari in its route. The routes are Bitung – Ternate – Sorong – Manokwari – Serui – Jayapura, and Serui – Manokwari – Sorong – Ternate – Bitung – Pantoloan – Balikpapan – Surabaya.
2. KM Gunung Dempo
The second is KM Gunung Dempo. The ships carry both cargo and people from other cities to Manokwari. As for the route, it starts from Tanjung Priok – Surabaya – Makassar – Sorong – Manokwari – Wasior – Jayapura.
While the other route is through Manokwari – Sorong – Namlea – Makassar – Surabaya – Tanjung Priok
3. KM Kelud
Moreover, Pelni also added two new ships in July 2022. The first is the KM Kelud. KM Kelud sails from Tanjung Priok, Kijang, Batam, and round trip route.
4. KM CIremai
The one that has Manokwari in its route is the KM Ciremai, with a route starting from Semarang, Tanjung Priok, Surabaya, Makassar, Bau Bau, Jayapura, and Manokwari.
Now that they have better Manokwari cargo access, delivering people’s needs and development is easier.
With all these positive impacts of Pelni’s expansion in Manokwari, it shows that the Pelni Manokwari cargo performance is growing positively. Hopefully with this growth, it also helps to accelerate development in West Papua and other parts of Papua.
