The Lists of Cities and Regencies of West Papua Province

Basically, West Papua is one of the provinces that exist in Indonesia. Precisely, in the land of Papua with Papua Province, Mountains Papua Province, South Papua Province, and Central Papua Province. In total, there are 1 city and 12 regencies of West Papua. So, here are the lists of them!

1. Manokwari Regency

For those of you who are curious, Manokwari is the capital of West Papua Province. Interestingly, this area is a regency, not a city. 

Geographically, Manokwari is located on the bird’s head area at a position of 0015′-3025′ south latitude and 132035′-134045′ east longitude. This regency has around 29 districts, 9 sub-districts, and 408 villages with an area of ​​14,268 km2.

2. South Manokwari Regency

The next one is South Manokwari Regency, which is a proliferation of Manokwari Regency. This regency was officially established on 16 November 2012, according to Law No. 23 of 2012. The capital of South Manokwari Regency is Ransiki.

3. Arfak Mountains District

Aside from South Manokwari, there is also the Arfak Mountains District which is a proliferation of Manokwari Regency. Its area is a group of mountains that stretch across the bird’s head of the land of Papua. No wonder this area is famous for its diversity of flora and fauna.

4. Sorong City

Then, there is Sorong, the only region in West Papua with city status. As the only city in West Papua, Sorong is one of the main economic centers. This region is famous for its oil wealth.

Based on the geographical location, Sorong City is located at coordinates 131°51′ east longitude and 0°54′ south latitude. This region has an area of ​​1,105 km2.

5. Sorong Regency

Aside from Sorong City, there is also Sorong Regency. This region has a very wide area, that is around 56.840 km2. It is the biggest region in West Papua.

Administratively, this region has 16 districts, 5 sub-districts, and 105 villages. Then, the capital of Sorong Regency is Aimas. 

6. South Sorong Regency

Then, there is also the South Sorong Regency which was established according to Law No. 26 of 2002. Geographically, it is located at 01°00′- 02°30′ south latitude and 131°00′ – 133°00′ east longitude. 

This regency has around 14 districts, 3 sub-districts, and 210 villages. The capital of South Sorong Regency is Teminabuan.

7. Maybrat Regency

Then, there is the Maybrat Regency, also the Sorong Regency’s proliferation. Its formation was based on Law no. 13 of 2009 on 16 January 2009. In total, this regency has around 11 districts.

8. Fakfak Regency

Fakfak is one of the oldest regions in the land of Papua. This district area is very strategic, so it became the economic center of Papua in the past. This is where Islam and Christianity entered Papua.

Fakfak is located at 131°30′ – 138°40′ east longitude and 2°25′ – 4° south latitude. This district has an area of ​​14,320 km2 and is divided into 9 districts.

9. Kaimana Regency

The next one is probably Kaimana Regency, which is the proliferation of Fakfak Regency. The formation of this regency is according to Law no. 26 of 2002 on 12 November 2002. However, the Kaimana Regency was only officially established on 11 April 2003.

10. Raja Ampat Regency

Then, there is Raja Ampat Regency, the most popular tourist center in West Papua. This regency is in the form of an archipelago with around 610 islands. However, there are only around 35 inhabited islands. The other islands are uninhabited; some do not have names yet.

11. Bintuni Bay Regency

The next one is Bintuni Bay Regency, established according to Law no. 26 of 2002. Its capital is Bintuni.

12. Wondama Bay Regency

Then, there is also Wondama Bay Regency, established on 12 April 2003. Its capital is Rasiei. 

13. Tambrauw Regency

One of the last regencies of West Papua is Tambrauw Regency. The Minister of Home Affairs of Indonesia inaugurated this regency on October 29, 2008. Its capital is Fef.
