The Kinds of Transportation Infrastructures in West Papua

The ministry of transportation will speed up the transportation infrastructure project in the West Papua and Papua province. Some buildings are included to this plan.

Those are like 10 airports, 6 harbours, and some other facilities which are needed by the people. The Transportation Minister, Mr. Budi Karya Sumadi gave his thought.

He asked the whole technical transportation unit parties to discuss and deliver the progress of the constructions that they have done. This real – time information is so important.

It will let the minister to get the right information about the transportation infrastructures development. It is especially in the West Papua province and the regions near that.

As we know that these areas are becoming one of the major plans owned by the Indonesia’s government. Acceleration is something that the government wants.

The aim is to increase the connectivity in these regions as the command of the Indonesia’s President, Mr. Joko Widodo or Jokowi. He said that Papua is the future of this country.

Furthermore, the minister also said that various kinds of services and facilities for that infrastructure will be developed as soon as possible. It will support the buildings.

The Air Sector is Becoming the Top List

Based on the information, the Transportation Ministry will develop and do this plan in the most eastern part of Indonesia. It is especially for the air transportation sector.

That is why; this institution will build 10 airports; 6 are built in papua and the rests are in the West Papua province. Those 6 airports ate Ewer, Kepi, Ilaga, Oksibil, Mopah, and New Nabire.

Meanwhile, the other 4 airports are the Rendani Manokwari, Wasior Baru, Waisai Raja Ampat, and the new Siboru Fak Fak. Why the air sector is in the next list?

The air transportation is the major mode to bring people or goods from a place to another. It is quite effective to carry so many people or things at the same time.

That is why; the government allocates a quite huge budget for this. They discuss about the detail where the budget is 33% from the total national air transportation infrastructure.

The Types of Transportation Infrastructures to develop in the West Papua

Besides the air sector, the government does not forget the other types to. Those are the marine and land transportations; here is the detail.

  1. The marine sector

Connecting the provinces through the sea will be a beneficial action to do. That is why; several harbors will be built in this region.

Based on the data, those harbours are like the Nabire, Depapre, Pomako, Serui, and Moor. Besides that, some main ports will be located in Sorong.

Those are the Seget and Arar to develop. In Sorong, there is also the public port that is going to get an asset through the government land.

  • The land sector in West Papua

Land is becoming the important way of transportation too. That is why; several bus stations will be built in this region.

Those are the Entropy in Jayapura, Sentani Lake, and many more again. Besides That, there js also a plan to build the cross – border that is located in Skouw.

The land and water bus are the examples of the modes that is going to made. Before, these plans were made to support the National Sports Week or PON in 2020.

It is hoped that the construction and accelerations in the West Papua like this can increase the logistics efficiency. That is also for the goods and services efficiency increase.

The other aims to achieve are to Raise the competition power between the local products. At the end, an effort like this is good to make the prices there are more reasonable.

The Recent Basic Challenges to Face

The challenge of accelerating development in the West Papua and around received the special government attention. To that end, Bappenas Head Suharso Monoarfa said something.

He informed that his party has mapped the fundamental challenges in those areas. The mapping, explained Suharso, is at least a base in an effort to accelerate development in the two provinces.

There are a number of challenges faced, and we have mapped them out. He told that in a working meeting chaired by Vice President K.H. Ma’ruf Amin, Jakarta.

There are 3 challenges that must be faced right now. Those are the challenges faced in the global context are the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s) 2030 targets.

The others are the environmental and international attention related to human rights issues. While in the national context, this area is faced with the challenge of ending the Otsus Fund policy.

From a regional context perspective, this region is faced with the challenges of poverty and a low Human Development Index (HDI). The poverty rate there is about 26.55%.

Meanwhile West Papua is 21.51% or the highest poverty rate in Indonesia which means it needs the right accelerations to make everything is better.
