A survey conducted by involving experts of world coral reefs in 2006 found more than 500 species of coral reefs with 14 new species. Purup island and strait of Numamurang is where the most awaited biodiversity ever recorded worldwide. There are over 950 species of reef fish found in the Cenderawasih Bay National Marine Park. This area is home to a population of mega fauna including Whale Shark (Rhinocodon typus), Mermaid (Dugong Dugon), Napoleon Wrasse, Turtles and a relatively healthy populations of predators such as sharks.[1]
Cenderawasih Bay National Park in the West Papua has many types of coral reefs has a stable temperature and can change caused by climate change. There are some threats that will affect the Cenderawasih Bay National Marine Park such as: The Use of bombs and explosives and local communities using traditional toxic ingredients such as tuba and potassium in catching fishes that would damage coral reefs, lack of oversight and lack of law enforcement in the area of the Cenderawasih Bay National Marine Park, plastic waste that is very destructive and disruptive on marine life. Thus local residents, law enforcement officers and the government should be more concerned to maintain and increase surveillance of the environment that exist in the Cenderawasih Bay National Marine Park located in West Papua.
